The Maxwell cluster consists of various partitions. Each partition has its own access restrictions. If you have access to any of the partitions, you have access to the Maxwell cluster and the interactive login nodes.
Getting access to the DESY general partitions
The partitions named maxcpu, maxgpu, short are provided by DESY-IT and are primarily intended for DESY employees - under one condition: your application is suitable for high-performance computing. That could include
- multi-core MPI applications which can efficiently use most of the cores on a single or multiple nodes
- many-core applications requiring a very low-latency high-bandwidth network
- application with very high memory consumption
- photon science applications or simulations in need of GPU acceleration
Embarrassingly parallel applications like Monte-Carlo simulations are usually poor examples of utilizing the resources effectively. We would advise using the NAF cluster instead, or your groups resources in Maxwell.
If your group has own resources (partitions) in Maxwell (see below) we recommend you first approach your admins and get access to that partition(s). That will also give you access to all, allgpu partitions, and is independent of the type of application you intend to run.
Getting access to display nodes or jupyterhub
Access to display nodes or jupyterhub (max-jhub.desy.de) is granted through access to Maxwell partitions. If you have access to any of the Maxwell partitions, you also have access to display (login) nodes and the jupyterhub. If you don't have access to any partition, you also won't get access to display nodes or jupyterhub.
Getting access to other partitions
Access to other partitions is controlled by registry resources, which are exclusively managed by the corresponding namespace administrators. If in doubt, please contact maxwell.service@desy.de.

Verifying access
On pal.desy.de issue the command my-resources. It will give a brief overview of resources or services your account is entitled to use. Assuming that you already have access to maxwell, you can get a complete list of partitions and accessibility using the command my-partitions. my-partitions is maxwell specific, so only available on maxwell nodes.
