P02.1 - Public : Information for Users with radioactive samples

Radioactive samples can be measured at beamline P02.1, as long as the followong conditions are met:

  • Samples from material balance zones (Materialbilanzzone) cannot be accepted, even if they are below the exemption limit (Freigrenze). If you want to measure materials from a material balance zone, then you have to find a way to get it officially out of it
  • Radioactive source must be encapsulated
  • No treatment of the radioactive sample on-site at DESY
  • Samples must be prepared in home institute (e.g. glueing to holders, etc.). However, samples which are encapsulated can be further treated here
  • The sum of all to DESY brought samples must be below the exemption limit
  • After the measurement / beam time samples must be brought back to home institute
  • Samples with radioactive elements which are connected to nuclear weapons are not allowed (e.g. plutonium)

In general, each case where users intend to bring radioactive samples is treated individually and you need to have an explicit allowance to bring radioactive samples on the DESY campus. Please get as early as possible in contact with your local contact to clarify all details (usually, the preparations in terms of safety takes much longer than for other samples). The local contact will then deal with the DESY safety department in order to get all authorizations.
