Support Lifecycle

Canonical releases an LTS release every 2 years. LTS releases have 5 years of support, skipping a single LTS is possible.

For more information, please check The Ubuntu lifecycle and release cadence

We only support the LTS releases, there is no support for the interim releases of Ubuntu.

Red Hat Family: CentOS & Scientific Linux

    • Based on CentOS Linux 8
    • Currently in early production status
    • On 8.12.2020, RedHat announced EOL of Centos 8 by end of 2021. We are actively following this development with the community, especially other large HEP laboratories, and are evaluating alternatives. Until further notice, we do not recommend EL 8 for production use!

Support Lifecycle

The Red Hat family usually has ~10 years of support for a major release. A new minor release will be available every ~6-9 months.
Starting for EL8 and upwards, a new minor release will be available every ~6 months.

We closely follow new minor versions, usually changing 4-6 weeks after CentOS has rebuild the new minor release from RHEL sources. This is announced ~1 week in advance.
Installation of older minor releases is not possible.

Please note the the support cycle for CentOS 8 has been shortened: On 8.12.2020, RedHat announced EOL of Centos 8 by end of 2021. With this, also a general change of strategy of CentOS was announced, such that no more rebuilds of RHEL will be provided by the CentOS project.

It is expected that CentOS 7 lifecycle will remain as planned.

Please refer to the above release cycle link to get detailed information on the support level.

Unsupported Distributions

For a limited number of distributions (e.g. debian, raspbian), IT provides a repository mirror. (http://nims.desy.de/)

No further install or configuration support is provided for general usage.

If you want to install different operating systems and integrate them into DESY management systems (kerberos, ldap, ...), you might find these Hints for unsupported configurations helpful.
Use this at your own risk - and keep in mind that these are targeted to experts.
