Detailed history

Config History
versiondatemodified byComment
2020-0106.01.2020Initial definition of standard High V and Reduced V configurations. High V config is based on operational voltages used during 16.5 GeV run from
9-13.10.2019 with the exception of A24 which was reduced from 855 MV to 700 MV due to a field emission event on 25.10.2019.
2020-0214.01.2020

First measurements with MARWIN indicated ~mSv/h neut rate at A22, which was later identified to be caused by M4.C3. This cavity has now been detuned and the VS configuration modified (loss of 10 MV).

2020-0322.01.202Re-established maximum voltage with current calibration state. Increased A21 from 693 MV to 760 MV. Limiting cavity is M2.C5. Limiter set to 24.8 MV/m (identified hard quench limit). Also increased limiter on M1.C2 by +2 MV/m (limit exceeded but no quench seen). See elog entry: https://ttfinfo.desy.de/elog/XMLlist?file=/XFELelog/data/2020/04/22.01_M/2020-01-22T11:33:22-04.xml&xsl=/elogbook/xsl/elog.xsl&picture=true
2020-0412.02.2020Reduced A23 by 40 MV due to excessive neutron rate peak signal on MARWIN. Note this needs to be checked.
2020-0520.02.2020

Successfully re-established 17.4 GeV operation point, based on re-identification of limits on each RF station. Max SP have been adjusted to reflect these new numbers. HIGH-V config is now set to match the new max SP values. HIGH-V config now supports 16.5 GeV user run with margin for any L3 RF station failure.

Reduced-V has now been adjusted to give one spare station margin at 14 GeV beam operation. All stations have been set to 620 MV with the exception of A6 and A9, which are set to 100MV below their radiation-limited maximum voltage. (A19 and A23 are more than 100MV below their radiation-limited max in this configuration).

2020-0626.05.2020

During startup after COVID-19 shutdown. MARWIN recorded 1.2 mGy/h at A6 during the high-voltage operation for BBA. On 26.05.2020 this was discovered to be due to poor M-S phase alignment which actually lead to a higher voltage operation than reported. A6 limit was subsequently checked with MARWIN and re-confirmed. The original 100 uSv/h margin left originally was removed since piezo operation now stabilises the cavity tuning. See

2020-0707.10.2020

Two changes to config:

A18 after V[e]RG[e] studies: A18, resulting in detuning of M3.C4 due to excessive radiation (MARWIN neutron limit).

A16 change in VS.CAL_SCA after BB-Calibration (1.0 → 1.17)

2020-0817.12.2020Changed A17 max from 730 MV to reflect current setting of 750 MV. This station was limited by klystrons problems. Current max is close to measured quench limited value of 755 MV.
2021-0908.04.2021Final update of new limits based on V[e]RG[e] studies during January startup. Several limits have changed, likely to calibration changes.
2021-1003.05.2021Based on BBCAL data, the VS.CAL_SCA for A21 was changed from 1.069 to 1.208. The MAXV was scaled accordingly from 770 MV to 870 MV. (Performed on 27.04.2021.)
2021-1128.06.2021After adjusting remaining L3 VS.CAL_SCA valued to BBCAL calibrated values on the 20.05.2021.
2021-1230.08.2021Increased all voltages for REDUCED-VS, to allow at least 10 degree off-crest operation with one station off beam. Additional margin required by ENERGY SVR.
2021-1330.09.2021Excessive radiations appear to originate from M4.C4 which has been detuned. Gradient instabilities seen at ~22MV/m which may be multipacting. Needs to be reviewed. See 2021-09-29 A23 radiation studies for more details.
2022-1411.02.2022A18 reduced from 845 MV → 830 MV after V[e]RG[e] study. M1.C1 quenching at 25.0 MV/m (originally recorded at 25.7 MV/m beginning 2021).
2022-1504.03.2022A24 further reduced to 730MV after V[e]RG[e] study on 25.02.2022. M2.C8 appears to have further degraded, now quenching at 22.4 MV/m.
2022-1625.04.2022

Several stations changed as a result of issues ramping up to >17 GeV for BBA (6-10.04.22)

  • A6 MARWIN shows increased FE neutron peak: reduced by 35MV
  • A10 indicated strong soft-quenching in M3.C8, which, although not new, caused cryo issues. Reduced by 35 MV.
  • A16  reduced quench field observed in M3.C8. Reduced by 25MV.
  • A20 reduced quench field observed in M1.C6. Reduced by 20MV.
  • A23 strong cryo-instability (soft quenching) observed in M3.C7, later identified with MARWIN as a very strong FE. M3.C7 detuned. Note that station is still constrained by high FE (MARWIN 500 uSv/h limit). Reduced by 35MV
2022-1721.07.2022

Configurations now include MODULATOR HV and ON-CREST operation.

  • MOD HV is now reduced for REDUCED-ENERGY (originally REDUCED-VS), primarily tor reduced running costs.
    • MAX-OP-VS also reflects a lower value, now limited by the klystron.
    • These numbers are currently conservatively set to operations VS values for those stations whose MOD HV has been reduced wrt HIGH-ENERGY configuration.
      • True limits needs to be experimentally verified.
  • ON-CREST operation is now indicated. These stations are not included in the LINAC ENERGY MANAGER server.
    • For the HIGH-ENERGY configuration, A12, A16, A21 and A23 are currently run on-crest with a VSUM reduced by 10% to reduced dark current radiation rates.

This release also includes a major format change to the page.

Note: no VS values have been changed in this release.

2022-1827.07.2022

Set A23 REDUCED-ENERGY MOD HV to current stable setting of 8100 kV (at Vladimir Fogel  request; original value of 7600 kV was not achievable.)

2022-1901.09.2022

MOD HV for HIGH ENERGY configuration changed for A6, A14 and A15 (as per instructions from Vladimir Fogel )

2022-2002.09.2022

Updated (reduced) MAX SP for A11 and A21 following V[e]RG[e] studies:

 A21, A11 V[e]RG[e] studies 11.08.2022

2022-2106.09.2022

Reduced A20 max VS from 815 to 795 MV (20MV) after V[e]RG[e] study (see logbook entry)

Increased A25 HV by +50V to avoid klystron saturation.

2022-2205.10.2022

VS.CAL_SCA modified for A23, A24 (BBCAL data)

MAX_OP_VS change:

A23: 765 MV → 842 MV (modified 12.09.22)

A24: 730 MV → 788 MV (modified 19.09.22)

2023-2303.01.2023Removed ON CREST in HE config for A12, A16, A21 and A23. These stations VS set points are still reduced by 10% from SP.MAX for radiation mitigation.

17.01.2023Corrected max v for A24 (was changed on 14.11.2022 V[e]RG[e] study). Config designation not updated. See A24 V[e]RG[e] studies 2022.11.07.
2023-2425.01.2023Identified strong source of dark current in A6 as M1.C3. See 2023-01-23 A6 Dark Current Studies. Cavity is now detuned operationally. New maximum VS is 655 MV (increased from 635 MV), still limited by radiation (MARWIN neutron rate of 500 uSv/h).
