you don't need this anymore, since zoom is already in the DESY Ubuntu repositories ...

$USER zoom on DESY green PC howto:

download the latest client from
https://uni-hamburg.zoom.us/download
Linux type other NOT! ubuntu
64 bit gcc 47+

create directory where you want to unpack the tar.xz
to actually unpack the file you need the package p7zip
and to run zoom you need the package libxcb-xtest0
You can install both using the
gpk-application command (even remote)

now unpack the package using
cat ~/Downloads/zoom_x86_64.tar.xz | p7zip -c -d - | tar txf -
or use simply
tar xf ../Downloads/zoom_x86_64.tar.xz
when your tar can handle .tar.xz archives proper
well now you installed the latest zoom version, now you will have to
make it available for the browser

you need a Zoom.desktop file at ~/.local/share/applications

===
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Zoom
Comment=Zoom Video Conference
Exec=/home/feller/usr/zoom/ZoomLauncher %U
Icon=Zoom.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Categories=Network;Application;
StartupWMClass=Zoom
MimeType=x-scheme-handler/zoommtg;x-scheme-handler/zoomus;x-scheme-
handler/tel;x-scheme-handler/callto;x-scheme-
handler/zoomphonecall;application/x-zoom
X-KDE-Protocols=zoommtg;zoomus;tel;callto;zoomphonecall;
Name[en_US]=Zoom
===
Keep an eye on the "Exec=" line the path has to fit your path! and
don't forget the %U at the End

and you will have to make this known to the system by adding some
entries to the section [Added Associations] in the file
~/.config/mimeapps.list

===
application/x-zoom=Zoom.desktop;
x-scheme-handler/callto=Zoom.desktop;
x-scheme-handler/tel=Zoom.desktop;
x-scheme-handler/zoommtg=Zoom.desktop;
x-scheme-handler/zoomphonecall=Zoom.desktop;
x-scheme-handler/zoomus=Zoom.desktop;
===

then you should be ready to use zoom

when it's still not working, the place for the mimeapps.list might be wrong.
for DESY green desktops, you might have to add the entries also to
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

System configuration can be difficult ;-)

Oh and you will have to update this zoom all by yourself, each time it requests an update ...
