With this workshop, we aim to discuss these questions, among staff and users of the LEAPS and LENS facilities, across disciplines and across Europe.

We will present projects and teams that have successfully used open datasets from PaN facilities to train their specific ML application (data consumers), as well as domain scientists (data producers) who have published curated data specifically for ML applications.

We will also look at cases where it hasn't worked so well, to identify what needs to be better curated on the FAIR data management side or understand the challenges in finding ML experts to effectively utilise the available data. A significant part of the workshop will be dedicated to discussion.

On September 19-21, the 2023 European HDF5 Users Group (HUG) summit is going to be held both in-person and virtually at DESY in Hamburg, Germany.

The HDF5 library and toolset have been widely used to simplify management and access to scientific and engineering data with ubiquitous data solutions. This meeting will have a focus on plugins and data compression, which become an increasingly important topic as data volumes grow, and is being hosted in collaboration with the LEAPS-INNOV EU project.

The HDF Group will give an update on the latest developments within HDF5 and present the roadmap for the future. We will have invited talks and contributed presentations from HDF5 users and developers, discussions on future requirements and developments, and events such as tutorials.

This HLRS course addresses students, data scientists, and researchers who would like to have an introduction to Machine and Deep Learning methods to solve challenging and future-oriented problems. Both Machine and Deep Learning methods and examples as well as a method for data compression will be presented. Different examples are shown via hands-on sessions on an HLRS cluster. However, please be aware that this course is not a sequence of beginners’-to-advanced lectures about theoretical aspects of AI.

The first part will be an introduction to basic methods in Machine Learning, including pre-processing and supervised learning using Apache Spark. The course will then move on to elements of supervised Deep Learning on real data to classify annotated images of waste in the wild. Given the deluge of information needed to power machine and deep learning methods, it is imperative to think about effective data processing strategies. Therefore, the course will conclude with an introduction to data compression using the BigWhoop library (developed within EXCELLERAT P2). As an efficient data reduction tool, BigWhoop can be applied to generic numerical datasets to minimize I/O bottlenecks and optimize data storage. The lectures are interleaved with many hands-on sessions using Jupyter Notebooks and scripts on HLRS systems.
In addition, a guest lecture from the IAG will show how Deep Learning can be applied to problems in computational fluid dynamics.

Researchers often use MATLAB to solve scientific and engineering problems. As the size and complexity of research projects grow, it becomes harder to maintain, share, and reuse your code. MATLAB provides capabilities to support collaborative software development practices and increase the scientific impact of your research projects.
In this hands-on online workshop, you will learn how to

  • Organize and manage your projects so everyone can easily continue development where you left off.
  • Use techniques to improve performance and reduce your memory requirements.
  • Write better, robust, and portable code.
  • Test and maintain your code.
  • Share your code with others so they can collaborate with you or build on your work.
  • Reuse code written in another programming language.

Complex high-frequency systems for scientific applications, such as particle accelerators, require tight integration between RF chains and control algorithms to calibrate and optimize performance.

In this webinar, you will learn how MATLAB and Simulink can be used for modeling custom RF systems based on specifications and hardware measurements. We will first address typical RF data analysis tasks, such as reading and writing Touchstone files, transforming, visualizing, and fitting S-parameters. As a second step, we will discuss how to model and simulate amplifiers, filters, lumped and distributed RF components such as waveguides and resonant cavities.

Using models as virtual prototypes, we will simulate RF chains including effects such as non-linearity and frequency dispersion in closed loop configuration for the design of custom adaptive systems. With practical examples, we will demonstrate how to optimize signal processing algorithms and control logic, algorithms, and state machines to compensate for RF impairments

Designing innovative wireless communication devices requires close collaboration across multiple disciplines. New standards require deep domain expertise as well as complex hardware architecture, making it even more challenging to realize a real-time system with the necessary performance requirements.

In this presentation, you will learn about how MATLAB and Simulink can be used for a Hardware/Software Co-Design workflow for rapid prototyping of wireless communication systems. You also learn how to use optimization and design techniques to meet your target-specific speed and area goals, and how to debug and verify your models in Simulink and on the target. With this approach, you will see the benefits of integrating multiple domains in a single design environment.
